BJJ was begun in 1914, by Maeda, a Japanese Martial Arts expert. He was given the opportunity to travel to Brazil to promote "jiu-do" by giving demonstrations and accepting challenges. It was from this visit that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Martial Art was born.
It evolved and through Helio Gracie the term 'Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu' was promoted across the USA and has now spread around the world.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLASSES (BJJ) AND TRADITIONAL JU-JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes focus on movement and body position whilst on the ground, to subdue opponents with hold downs or locking techniques. BJJ classes utilise countless counters, techniques, ideas and movements.
Essentially traditional Ju-Jitsu classes are of Japanese origin and are more in line with the original forms of martial arts. Classes focus on a stand up form of self defence as would have been practiced by samurai warriors.
