WHAT CAN YOU TYPICALLY EXPECT TO LEARN?
Judo classes teach students how to use the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. Judo lessons practice how to use the strength of an opponent's against them. The object is to either throw or takedown one's opponent to the ground, immobilise or otherwise subdue an opponent with a grappling manoeuvre.
One of the most important Judo techniques is learn is how to fall "Ukemi" (breakfalls). Beginners Judo classes focus on learning breakfalls techniques that train students to take throws and overcome the fear of being thrown. It is not possible to excel in throwing, or to defend against an attack successfully, without a thorough understanding of falling.
Learn to throw (nage-waza) an opponent beginners will learn easy throws, in one direction, without movement, slowly with a cooperating partner. As a student masters each element more complex moves are practised by adding other directions, movements, and resistance can be applied.
Learn how to use Judo holds (katame-waza), these grappling techniques are used to hold down an opponent using arm-locks and strangle holds. Strangle holds include, Blood Choke these block the flow of blood and Air Strangle block the flow or air. Real fights are often won on the ground so learning how to hold down an attacker is important in winning a fight.
Students can progress to Judo striking techniques (atemi-waza) these are considered too dangerous for competitions and are usually performed in forms using protective gear. These techniques are practised by advance practitioners and may not be available in your local judo club.
All judo classes involve learning basic techniques which under professional supervision leading to progressive mastery of judo techniques by a registered British Judo Association qualified judo coach.
